I saw my first snowy just days later.
Many birders in our area have their choice of seeing a snowy in either Halfmoon NY or the Washington Co. grasslands in Ft.Edward. And by "get" I mean not just a sighting, but photographs as well. I'll look for them on your flickr page!

-nishiki_85 - glad the eBird map worked out. I actually cheat when placing maps: I take a screen capture after generating the view I want, then upload it as a jpg image. I haven't tried the "embedding" option on Google Maps. . . yet. I like that functionality and may try it soon, if I figure out any tricks I'll be sure to post them!
-Mikenoflicksterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17404386000823552954noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4451484812160865521.post-58481777530322309902009-02-04T22:36:00.000-05:002009-02-04T22:36:00.000-05:00Mike,Thanks for the tip. He's certainly exciting, no matter the distance - especially since you got to see him fly! I got really lucky when I went, I never thought it was possible to be that close to one, or that it would voluntarily perch so close to the road. But it's such a low-traffic area I guess not much bothers him. Hopefully he's finding enough to eat!

Beautiful area around there, I had a great "morning drive" through the region. Makes it hard to go into work!

Best,
Mikenoflicksterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17404386000823552954noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4451484812160865521.post-48790871824552105092009-02-01T19:07:00.000-05:002009-02-01T19:07:00.000-05:00Mike, you made our day! It was a ways back from the road, and after about 15 minutes, flew back further into the field, so it was fortunate that we arrived when we did. My brother-in-law grew up near that intersection, and says he remembers snowy owls at their farm during winters when he was growing up.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4451484812160865521.post-5336128826310340802009-02-01T18:09:00.000-05:002009-02-01T18:09:00.000-05:00Mike - Thanks for the post! I've been carefully scrutinizing the backroads I often take to work hoping for a sighting, but nothing much to speak of yet. One group of WW Crossbills stood out, but no owls.

I wish I could have included ON in my eBird map, but as far as I know it's not possible to combine two countries. You have to choose US in order to select states, then you'd have to switch to Canada to select provinces, and it appears you can't store your selections when you switch. Also, the limit of using only three Bird Conservation Regions didn't really generate the map I wanted to show.

Generating that Google map in eBird should work for Canadian provinces. The grid map appears at the 'zoomed out' levels, such as country or 'Across the Americas.' If you choose Canada as your country, then Ontario as your province, you should have drilled down enough to wind up with a map that enables you to zoom in and click on the markers for more info.

One word of warning: eBird will not be able to generate such a map if there is too much data to process. So, if you leave the area too large or the date range too wide, especially if you choose a frequently-reported species, you'll wind up with an error. I'd bet Snowy owl for Nov 08 - Jan 09 in Ontario should be fine.

Good luck, and please let me know if you're able to generate the map you want.

Good birding,
Mikenoflicksterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17404386000823552954noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4451484812160865521.post-37094118214582235832009-02-01T11:02:00.000-05:002009-02-01T11:02:00.000-05:00Interesting post. My wife and I saw one in St. Catharines, Ontario last December. The Hamilton Study Area has had weekly observations. How did you obtain the eBird map? I can only get the map with green squares (grid map). Maybe not available on eBird Canada?nishiki_85https://www.blogger.com/profile/09296388361828856622noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4451484812160865521.post-23292196164839886492009-02-01T10:29:00.000-05:002009-02-01T10:29:00.000-05:00They sure have been showing up all over the place!...They sure have been showing up all over the place!
